I’m obsessing over Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic at the moment so I figured I’d name this shoot after it. My brain is being filled with her words on all things to do with living a creative life… golden nuggets like “We must understand that the drive for perfectionism is a corrosive waste of time, because nothing is ever beyond criticism. No matter how many hours you spend attempting to render something flawless, somebody will always be able to find fault with it. (There are people out there who still consider Beethoven’s symphonies a little bit too, you know, loud.) At some point, you really just have to finish your work and release it as is — if only so that you can go on to make other things with a glad and determined heart. Which is the entire point. Or should be.” I mean, how good is that? Punches me right in the chest.
I’m trying to make this the year of shooting the things that make my guts and my heart leap around. I mean, there’s a lot I want to do this year (post more of my work would be good for starters, finally having my own office space and then more self-improvement goals like cooling it on the speeding fines – 4 arrived for me in the last month in case there are any kind sponsors out there?) It helps working with people from all sides of the industry who inspire you huge amounts. People who are creative in their approach to things, people who see their work as play. Which was what this shoot was all about, playing. We had a brief and a concept in mind- we were going to do one look and aimed for 2 frames (ha!). 5 looks later and we would’ve carried on if there were time. And that my friends, is what it’s all about.
